Where AI Gets Its GRC Answers (2026 Study) | Lil Big Things

In 2026, each AI platform builds its GRC software answers from a different kind of page. Perplexity leans on ranked "best GRC tools" lists (38% of its citations). Google AI Overviews leans on guides plus YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit (16%). ChatGPT leans on standards bodies like NIST and on vendor product pages. GRC vendors wrote 62% of the ranked lists AI cites.

We tracked 87 unbranded GRC buying questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and classified all 35,705 citations by page type. Here is what each platform trusts, who wrote those pages, and what a GRC marketing team should publish for each.

Why does AI search matter for GRC software buyers in 2026?

AI search matters for GRC software because the shortlist now forms before a buyer ever talks to sales. 6sense's 2025 Buyer Experience Report found the eventual winner is on the Day One shortlist 95% of the time, and first contact happens 61% of the way through the journey. G2's 2025 Buyer Behavior Report found 29% of B2B software buyers now start research in ChatGPT more often than in Google. Gartner found 45% of B2B buyers used generative AI in a recent purchase.

The clicks are thinning too. Pew Research Center found Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. If a GRC vendor isn't named inside the AI answer, it often isn't seen at all.

Which content types does each AI platform cite for GRC questions?

Each platform has a clear lean. Perplexity cites ranked lists most. Google AI Overviews cites guides, video and social posts most. ChatGPT spreads its citations widest across content types and leans hardest on standards bodies and product pages.

Bar chart: share of GRC citations by content type for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Perplexity 37.6% ranked lists, ChatGPT 17.0% standards and official sources, Google AI Overviews 16.1% video, social and forums.

What does ChatGPT cite for GRC software questions?

ChatGPT cites standards bodies, vendor product pages and head-to-head comparisons more than any other platform. Standards and official sources are 17% of ChatGPT's GRC citations, against 1.2% on Google AI Overviews. NIST.gov is ChatGPT's single most cited domain at 6.4%, ahead of Drata (5.6%), ServiceNow (5.4%) and Vanta (5.0%).

ChatGPT also cites more sources per answer: 20.5 on average, against 6.9 for Google AI Overviews. But it concentrates them. Its top 10 domains take 37% of all its citations, nearly double Perplexity's 20%. Comparison pages ("Vanta vs Drata") are 8.7% of ChatGPT's citations, 3.6 times their share on Perplexity.

What this means: ChatGPT rewards GRC vendors whose product and framework pages explain controls in the language of the standard itself, and who publish honest comparison pages.

What does Perplexity cite for GRC software questions?

Perplexity cites ranked lists more than anything else. "Best GRC software" and "top compliance automation tools" style pages are 38% of Perplexity's GRC citations, more than double ChatGPT's 15.5%. Review sites are 6.6%, and G2 is Perplexity's second most cited domain at 3.6%, behind Vanta at 4.2%.

Perplexity is also the widest reader. It cited 2,428 different domains, against 1,426 for ChatGPT, even though ChatGPT made 70% more citations. That makes Perplexity the easiest platform for a smaller GRC vendor to break into: a single well-built list on a niche site can get picked up.

What this means: to show up on Perplexity, a GRC vendor needs to be on the lists, its own and other people's, and on G2.

What do Google AI Overviews cite for GRC software questions?

Google AI Overviews cites guides and social video more than any other platform. Guides and how-tos are 35% of its GRC citations. Video, social posts and forums are 16%, against 1.4% on ChatGPT. YouTube is the single most cited domain in AI Overviews at 8.3%, with LinkedIn at 3.0% and Reddit at 2.7% also in its top 10.

AI Overviews also gives out the fewest slots: 6.9 citations per answer on average. Fewer slots mean each one is worth more, and a short explainer video can take a slot that a 3,000-word article misses. NOLA and Ponemon's 2026 study found 48% of enterprise security decision-makers use AI Overviews for product research.

What this means: for Google's AI answers, GRC vendors need clear how-to guides plus a YouTube and LinkedIn presence on the same topics.

Who writes the pages AI cites about GRC software?

GRC vendors write most of them. Vendor-owned domains hold 62% of the ranked-list citations, 59% of the guide citations and 43% of the comparison citations in our sample. Across all content types it is close to half: 49% vendor-owned, 51% third-party.

That means the "independent" list a buyer reads in an AI answer was often written by a competitor. Vanta appeared in 30% of answers to unbranded GRC questions, the most of any vendor, followed by ServiceNow (27.5%) and Drata (24.9%). All three publish heavily in the formats AI cites. Proprietary data is the hardest format to copy, which is why original research earns citations at scale.

What should a GRC vendor publish for each AI platform?

PlatformLeans onPublish thisOff-site
ChatGPTStandards bodies, product pages, comparisonsFramework pages written in the standard's own terms (SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST CSF), honest "X vs Y" pagesGet referenced in auditor and consultancy guides
PerplexityRanked lists, review sitesYour own "best tools" list for each use case, alternatives pagesG2 reviews, inclusion in third-party lists
Google AI OverviewsGuides, YouTube, LinkedIn, RedditStep-by-step how-to guides with clear answers up topShort YouTube explainers, LinkedIn posts, real answers on Reddit

How should a GRC marketing team start?

Start with the pages buyers already reach, then expand into the formats each platform cites. In order:

  1. Audit your framework and product pages. Make each one answer the standard's own questions in the first 100 words. This is what ChatGPT pulls.
  2. Publish one ranked list per use case (SOC 2 for startups, enterprise GRC, vendor risk) and be fair to competitors. This is what Perplexity pulls.
  3. Write comparison and alternatives pages for the three vendors buyers ask about most.
  4. Turn your top five guides into short videos and LinkedIn posts. This is what Google AI Overviews pulls.
  5. Track it. Measure which questions name you, on which platform, every two weeks, and move effort to what is working.

AI-referred traffic to tech and software sites grew 120% year over year, according to Adobe Analytics. The teams that publish in the right format for each platform will take most of it. If you're new to the discipline, start with our plain-English guide to generative engine optimization.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI platform cites G2 the most for GRC software?

Perplexity. G2 is Perplexity's second most cited domain for GRC questions at 3.6% of citations, and review sites overall are 6.6% of its citations. Review sites are 6.0% on ChatGPT and 3.0% on Google AI Overviews.

Do AI platforms cite vendor blogs or independent sources for GRC software?

Both, almost evenly. In our 2026 sample, 49% of GRC citations went to vendor-owned domains and 51% to third parties. Vendors dominate ranked lists (62%) and guides (59%), while standards bodies and review sites are third-party by nature.

Does YouTube matter for GRC software visibility in AI search?

Yes, on Google. YouTube is the single most cited domain in Google AI Overviews for GRC questions at 8.3% of citations. It barely appears on ChatGPT, so treat video as a Google AI Overviews play.

Which GRC vendors does AI recommend most in 2026?

In our sample of unbranded buying questions, Vanta appeared in 30% of AI answers, ServiceNow in 27.5% and Drata in 24.9%, followed by MetricStream, OneTrust, Secureframe, Archer and AuditBoard. Treat these as directional; they depend on the questions asked.

How we ran this study

We tracked 87 unbranded GRC software buying questions daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews (US) from late September to October 6, 2026, using Searchable. That produced 2,718 AI answers and 35,705 citations, where one citation is one answer citing one URL. We classified each cited page by type using Searchable's page labels plus our own URL rules; 13% of citations could not be typed and are excluded from the shares. The questions lean commercial and were drawn from two GRC prompt sets, so treat vendor rankings as directional. Gemini, AI Mode, Claude and Copilot were not covered.
